Sarnia Computer Users' Group, Digital Special Interest Group (SIG) is a group who discuss and help with many aspects of digital photos and photography.

Visitors are always welcome at our meetings Digital SIG meetings held on the second Tuesday of each month, excluding July, August and December.

The meetings are held at Adult Learning Center, 660 Oakdale Avenue, Sarnia.

Program Making better photographs - Pierre Houle
Meeting report AThe Digital Photography SIG meeting held June 9th was well attended. Pierre led the meeting with a talk on making better photographs. He took the group to several websites which gave many simple tips to improve their odds of making great pictures. Pierre agreed to continue as SIG leader next year.

Program Pierre will show basic camera techniques for taking photographs in unusual lighting situations, particularly beach scenes, indoor back lit portraits, snow scenes to name a few.

Meeting report Twenty Seven members attended the Digital Photography SIG this month.

Pierre led the discussion with a talk on camera settings for odd lighting situations. Beach, snow, sunset, night time and lightning scenarios were covered. Scene modes were offered as the best solution to the point and shoot camera.

how to keep your pictures sharp,
how to calculate Zoom and
how to determine the best Zoom for you.

Meeting report Pierre led the meeting with a discussion of Zoom. magnification, zoom factor, digital vs optical zoom, How zoom is calculated in a point and shoot camera were all discussed. For more information visit the website.

Program Pierre will demonstrate an audio-visual slide show program
Meeting report The January Digital Photography SIG was well attended with no seats to spare. Pierre led the meeting with a demonstration of an audio-visual slide show program called Pictures to Exe. Several features of the program were demonstrated including how to add music, setting timing and animation effects. This was followed by discussions on taking lightning pictures and ideas for future meetings.

Program The topic will be general photo manipulation using Photoshop Elements 7.
Meeting report 26 members attended the Digital Photography SIG on November 11th. Pierre led the meeting with a demonstration of Photoshop Elements 6, a photo editing program from Adobe. A couple of videos were shown as well as an explanation of layers by Pierre. There are many free video tutorials on the web for anyone interested in learning more.

There was some discussion about what to cover in future meetings. However, there was no clear direction from the group. There will be no Digital SIG meeting in December so the next meeting will be Wednesday, January 13th, 7:00 P.M. at the ALC. The topic will be announced prior to the meeting. If anyone would like to make suggestions as to what to discuss at a meeting, please let Pierre know.

ProgramThe topic for the meeting is "How to Judge the Quality of a Photograph". We will discuss how to assess a photograph for impact, technical quality and artistic merit. We will talk about how the Sarnia Photographic Club judge photographs. In discussing these topics we should be able to improve our photography.

Meeting report 26 members attended the October Digital Photography SIG on October 7th.
Pierre led the discussion with a talk on what makes a great photograph. Several web sites were visited where photos of master photographers were examined and discussed. Some general rules about composition were also discussed with examples. It was generally agreed that "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" and most "rules" can be broken (and are). The talk concluded with a brief discussion of how the Sarnia Photographic Club judging takes place.
This was a great meeting with much discussion.

The next Digital Photography SIG meeting will be Wednesday, November 4th, 7:00 P.M. at the ALC. The topic will be general photo manipulation using Photoshop Elements 7.
