President's Message - January, 2012

In May of this year, SCUG will be 30 years old. Started by Jim Verdon and a few other people, SCUG has been around a while. I was not there for the first day; I joined in 1984 with my COCO computer. I remember various computer meetings taking place at Computer Terminal, St. Clair High School, United Way in Point Edward, Alexander Mackenzie High School, SCITS, St. Bartholomew, St. James, and here at YMCA Adult Learning Centre. We even had meetings at houses.

This month at our general meeting we will be talking about changes at the Library. I remember as a kid, going to the library on the weekends and looking at all the books, getting facts for history papers, looking at encyclopedias in book form.

To get a book, you had a library card that they would copy onto thermal paper with the Library Card in the book that you wanted. Even the bookmobile was a great place to visit wghen it came around. Things change. Barcodes and computers have replaced the old cards, and everything is digital now. E-books are everywhere.

One of our SCUG members, HERB and MARY SCHWARZ, have been put on this year's Mayors List. Also congratulations to Greg West on being placed on the APCUG Board of Directors for the computer clubs in several states.
